Where do the kids who come to Camp Tall Timbers come from?

Most of our campers come from the Washington DC and Maryland, Baltimore and Rockville areas as well as Virginia, however we also have many campers from other parts of the country – Atlanta, Philadelphia and California to name a few and even campers from all over the world. They travel as far as Spain, England and France! What’s great, is you will make friends from near and far!

Should I take the bus to and from camp?

We offer a charter bus service from Baltimore MD, Rockville MD and Tyson’s Corner VA to and from camp – it is a great chance for you to meet new friends or travel with old friends independently from your parents however, if you wanted to be dropped off at camp that Is fine too.

Do most new kids come to camp with a friend?

Some campers do, but most take the plunge on their own – this may seem a little daunting but as soon as you step foot on the bus there will be lots of friendly faces to greet you and we know you will have made lifelong friends before you know it.

Can I stay in the same cabin as my friend?

Absolutely, we ask you fill out one of our cabin request forms and we will do out very best to ensure you are in the same cabin.

How many kids will be in my cabin?

It depends, but it can be anywhere between 6 – 12, the usual is between 8 and 10 – so lots of friends to be found!

Do I have to clean up?

Yes. Every morning we all spend about 30 minutes getting our cabin ready and ourselves for the day a head. This will involve making your bed, making sure your cubbies are neat, and doing one chore in the cabin such as sweeping the cabin floor or making sure all lights and fans are switched off before everyone leaves for their first activity!

And remember: If your cabin is the cleanest at the end of the week – you could get a very special trip out of camp – for delicious ICE-CREAM, for your cabin ONLY! Yeah!

Are there bathrooms in the cabins and are they nice?

Yes! Every cabin has modern cubicle bathrooms and sinks and showers, we make sure they are kept very clean.

What should I wear every day at Camp?

CTT is very informal casual, and you need to be ready for any adventure – so every day wear is a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers. Make sure you are comfortable and ready go!

Can I bring costumes and props for special events?

Please do! Costumes and props are great for evening activities and special days.

Can I bring stuff to decorate my cabin with?

Of course, photos, posters, cards, stuffed animals, lights are usual decorative items that really make it feel like a home away from home.

What if there are some activities that I really want to do and others I do not?

Well the AWESOME thing about Camp Tall Timbers is that here YOU make your own schedule – you choose exactly what activities you would like to do! You tailor your schedule to all the fun things you want to do and learn. We always encourage campers to try something new and challenge themselves but ultimately the choice is yours… enjoy the freedom!

How will I know what is going on at all times?

Every morning, lunch and dinnertime we have announcements in the dining hall where all events for that day are explained to everyone. Don’t worry if you don’t remember, Your counselors will know what is going on at all times – so they can help you.

How will I keep track of time?

We have a loud BELL here at CTT located outside the office, that helps us stick to our schedule. No need for a watch – just listen out for the bell, when you hear it, its time to move on to the next fun activity!

How will I know where my activities are located?

On your very first day at camp, your counselors will give you a tour of camp and before you know it you will be finding your way around like a pro.

Do I stay in my cabin on rainy days?

Not necessarily – we will usually find a fun activity to do inside either the gym or the rec-hall; the rain never stops our fun!

What happens during rest hour?

During rest hour you can take the time to write a letter home to let everyone know about your time at camp, you can take a nap, play cards with your cabin mates – a quiet activity to re-charge your batteries ready for a busy afternoon of fun!

Do I have to be a good athlete to do well at camp?

Not at all. We have some very athletic campers who really flourish at camp but similarly we have many campers who think they are not athletic at all and improve and grow as the summer goes on… all we ask is that you try, you may surprise yourself. Emphasis is on teamwork, fair play and improvement.

We have a strong athletic program but with our water sports, horse back riding, outdoor challenges and creative and performing arts programs there is something for everyone.

Can I watch TV and use my cell phone?

Unfortunately no. There are no TV’s at camp and cell phones are only to be used on trips out of camp – though we ask preferably that you do not bring your cell phone to camp.

Can I take private lessons?

Yes! Currently we offer individual tuition for golf, tennis and guitar. Just let us know what you would like to do.

Do boys and girls eat and do activities together?

Both boys and girls do their activities together yes … we are a co-ed camp and believe co-ed interaction is invaluable for social development. Boys and girls do eat at the same time but on separate sides of the dining hall where each cabin sits together – meal times are full of crazy fun games too.

What trips can I go on?

We have wonderful facilities at CTT but sometimes we like to venture out. Some of the trips we take include: Roller skating, Cacapon State Park Beach, Trout Pond, Hershey Park, Kings Dominion and Bowling.

Can I sign up for any other trips?

If you have completed grade 9 or above, we offer a theater trip, go-karting and water rafting too.

Is there a camp cookout?

Yes we usually cook out at least once a week. Yummy!

What happens after dinner?

After dinner you will have a little bit of down time where you may choose to rehearse a skit or song or something for the evening activity or you may choose to relax in your cabin or you may want to play some baseball or ping pong until the bell rings for the evening activity to begin.

What are the evening activities like?

So much fun! The evening activities vary considerably, but they are always great fun. One night may be cheesy skit night and the next may be a campfire with s’mores!

What happens on my birthday?

If you are lucky enough to have a birthday at camp, you will receive a birthday cake, the whole camp will sing to you as you skip around the room! Sound fun? We will be sure to make it an unforgettable birthday.

Who can help me if I have a problem?

Any of the staff at CTT will be on hand to help at all times. Your counselor will be closest to you but if they are not around, any of the CTT staff will be happy to help.

What happens if I feel sick?

We have a nurse and doctor on site so a quick visit to the infirmary and you’ll be back enjoying yourself again in no time.

Can I spend time with my bro or sis?

Yes, twice daily we have a period called ‘Free Swim’ which is a chunk of time where you are free to do whatever you choose. Maybe visit the pool, play some tennis or just hang out – this is an ideal time to spend time with your bro or sis.

Ohh yes… mail sent to you will be waiting for you in the dining hall at meal times.

They sure can. Any emails we receive will be printed out and along with the mail be awaiting you in the dining hall at meal times.

No, you have an ‘account’ with us and any spending money you need you can take from there.

What is the food like?

We serve a variety of food kids love to eat! Pizza, pasta, turkey dinner, mac and cheese – to name a few. There is always something to eat, and lots of options. Salad bar, fruit and desert are always available too.

Who is the camp director and what are they like?

Glenn Smith is Camp Tall Timber’s owner and director. He was a camper at CTT when he was younger, then a counselor and now director. He is very friendly and knows everything there is to know about camp and making it fun, safe summer for us all.

Do I have to wash my dirty clothes?

Nope! We have an on site laundry service that will do all that for you. All you have to do is leave it on your cabin deck – when it is your cabin’s laundry day and it will be returned the next day smelling fresh and folded beautifully!

How do I know what to pack?

Once you have registered with us and we have all of your forms we will send you a ‘suggested to pack’ list to help you make sure you don’t forget anything. If you did forget something, don’t worry, we can always provide most things you forget.

Who receives awards at camp?

At the end of each session we award ‘golden feathers’ to one camper in each activity who has shown outstanding effort, improvement or sportsmanship.

Can my parents see me having fun at camp?

They sure can. They can follow us daily on twitter and facebook, as well as keep up to date with our blog and weekly photos on our website. Your parents will feel as though they are right there with you.

Can I change my session or stay longer?

If you would like to stay longer – that is a huge compliment to us and we are so pleased you had such a fantastic time – this can definitely be arranged. Changing sessions depends on availability but will be considered.
