Camp Tall Timbers is truly a family affair. Founded in 1970 by Executive Director Jerry Smith, today, his son Glenn is the camp owner and serves as Camp Director managing all aspects of the operation year round. Camp Tall Timbers has a 4 -1 ratio of campers to staff.
The entire team at Camp Tall Timbers is a wonderful mix of teachers, coaches and college students. Each staff member is carefully selected for their teaching expertise in a given activity area, their personality, as well as their interest in working with children. The staff reports to camp several days ahead of our campers so that they may go through our Counselor Institute. Some of the situations we thoroughly review during Institute are daily responsibilities, staff conduct and emergency procedures. Additionally, by the time our campers arrive, our staff has reviewed all the information about their individually assigned campers as provided by their parents. This is one more way we strive to ensure a safe, fun and personalized camp experience.
Our counselors eat, sleep and interact closely with their campers. Background and reference checks are just two of the procedures we go through to ensure a staff member is right for our camp setting. Many are graduates of our “counselor – in – training” program and/or are former campers. [Back to top]
Name: Glenn Smith
Role: Camp Owner & Director
Biography: I have had the pleasure of being involved in camping most of my life. My father came to Hampshire County in 1955, and I was an announcement over the loud speaker on the last day of camp in 1962. We came to our current property in 1970 and I was a camper, CIT, counselor and then director until 1986. After working in real estate, with most of my experience in asset management, I returned to Camp Tall Timbers in the late 1990s as the director, and soon thereafter I became the proud owner of Camp Tall Timbers. There is not enough room on this website for me to explain the impact that camp has had on my life; the diversity of skills I have gained and the many, many great campers, counselors, administrators and parents I have had the privilege to be involved with is indescribable.
Now as a father and husband I look forward to the added incentive of giving my family the same great experiences I have had. During the summer I live at camp 24/7, and in the off-season I live with my family in Frederick, MD.

Name: Emma Hully
Role: Assistant Director
Biography: Coming all the way from Northern England, I jetted across the pond and began working for Camp Tall Timbers as a counselor in 1998, where for the next 3 years I returned every summer as I couldn’t get enough of the s’mores. In the summer of 2001, I became part of the administrative team and in 2002 I began working full time for Camp Tall Timbers as Assistant Director to Glenn. Over the years I have picked up many certifications in different areas from archery to water safety instruction but my camp specialty is ringing the bell. I can’t wait for DIPPIES.

Supporting Jerry and Glenn is a dedicated staff. These young men and women come to us from colleges and universities from across the country and from around the world. We spend a lot of time in the off season traveling to college campuses interviewing and hiring qualified staff. A portion of our staff comes to us from Great Britain. They, too, are college students who go through a rigorous application and review process prior to coming to camp. In addition to these talented people, we employ administrators, or unit leaders who oversee cabin and activity areas in camp. These staff members are a mix of teachers and coaches that provide added supervision in the camp setting.
